Looking Up That Day

Unimaginable to ever think,

that looking up that day

into adoring eyes,

a last time for goodbyes.

Not realizing at the time,

how those moments would securely bind.

Forever connecting hearts to hearts,

and minds to evil mindless acts.

Unbelievable the sight,

those looking up that day,

so many steps to climb,

such brave response, too little time.

How profane this stage to meet one’s destiny,

honor and valor would be their legacy.

Unfathomable the sacrifice,

so unacceptable the price.

A note from Chris

I actually wrote this poem on Sunday, September 11, 2011. on the 10th anniversary of the events of 9/11/2001 in NYC.

  4. This is a lovely tribute, not only were the people that served on that day heroes but the other people who were lost were also heroes in their family and friends lives.

  5. Not at first, but when it clicked… chilling – and so powerful.

  6. As many heroes as victims that day, when the world stopped for a moment or two.

  7. Looking up that day…good use of repetition of that line to remind us and to give a sense of how it must have been for those who went beyond just looking up.

  8. first, i love the city…second, i was in the air that day, over GA on the way to FL and was put down in ATL…third, a lot of brave people lost their lives serving others that day and that is one thing i will never forget…

  9. Awesome tribute to so many heroes. Wonderfully written poem.

  10. Wow…this is so well written and it takes me back to that day. The days before when we said good bye, not knowing it was the last good bye to them and our world that changed forever. Thank you for this. Truly. Thank you.

  11. I like how you’ve approached 9/11. There were a lot of heroes on that day.
